Question 1

Is climate controlled storage worth it in Lancaster County?

Accepted Answer

For anything that reacts to heat, cold, or humidity, yes. Lancaster County summers run humid and winters bring real cold, and that combination is exactly what causes wood to swell, paper to curl, and metal to corrode over time. If what's being stored is meant to last more than a season or two, the added protection tends to be worth the difference in rent.

Question 2

What temperature does a climate controlled unit actually stay at?

Accepted Answer

Climate controlled units are built to hold a narrow range year-round rather than tracking the outside weather, so a unit stays roughly as comfortable in January as it does in July. Exact ranges vary by facility, and Elanco Self Storage can confirm current specifications for its New Holland units over the phone or during a walkthrough.

Question 3

Does climate control stop humidity and mold, or just heat and cold?

Accepted Answer

Both matter, and they're not the same thing. Temperature control alone keeps a unit from freezing or overheating, but it's humidity control that actually prevents the mold, mildew, and rust that ruin furniture, documents, and electronics — which is why the two are usually paired together in a true climate controlled unit rather than offered separately.

Question 4

How much more does climate controlled storage cost than a standard unit?

Accepted Answer

Climate controlled units typically rent for more than standard units of the same size, since they require additional insulation and equipment to maintain. The difference is usually smaller than the cost of replacing a warped dresser or a water-damaged box of documents, which is the comparison worth making before deciding based on price alone.

Question 5

Do I need climate control if I'm only storing something for a few months?

Accepted Answer

It depends more on what's being stored than how long. A few months spanning a Pennsylvania winter or a humid summer stretch can still be enough to damage wood furniture, electronics, or paper records, even on a short timeline. Boxes of tools or seasonal gear can usually wait it out in a standard unit without an issue.

Question 6

What size climate controlled unit do I need for a downsizing move?

Accepted Answer

It depends on how much furniture is coming along versus what's being let go of. Someone moving into a smaller space at Garden Spot Village, for example, might only need a small unit for a few dressers and boxed keepsakes, while a full household move calls for something larger. Calling ahead with a rough inventory is the fastest way to land on the right size the first time.
